OHSU Knight Cancer Research Building
The South Waterfront Development Agreement, which originated in 2003, has guided significant public and private investment in the development of the central district, transforming the area into a vibrant, sustainable mixed-use neighborhood that offers open space, commercial, retail, institutional and educational facilities as well as a range of housing options at various levels of affordability.
As the city’s largest employer and as a center of research and innovation that will lead to new jobs and economic growth, OHSU plays a critical role in the development of the North Macadam Urban Renewal Area. Its 15,000 employees serve more than 250,000 patients each year. Most recently, OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute’s recent and very successful Knight Cancer Challenge raised $1 billion, 20 percent of which will be used on construction and development of the Knight Cancer Research Building and new cancer clinical facilities. The completion of the research building along with the Center for Health & Healing South will be important milestones for OHSU’s expansion in the South Waterfront and its growth within the Central City.
OHSU Knight Cancer Research Building
The Knight Cancer Research Building will be the second building in the OHSU Schnitzer Campus, following the Collaborative Life Sciences Building which was completed in 2014. This seven-story, 320,000 sq ft building designed by SRG Partnership will include a conference center, research laboratory space, research support functions, ground level retail and offices as well as two levels of below-grade parking. The project broke ground in July 2016 with scheduled completion in 2018. The research building will house top scientists and physicians, working together on the early detection of cancer, when it is easier to treat and it is hoped, easier to prevent.
