As part of PDC’s We Build Green Cities initiative, a small town in Japan hired a Portland design team to lead a community design process. Joined by PDC staffers, PLACE, a landscape architecture and planning firm, and PROPEL STUDIO, a community-focused architecture firm, traveled to Aridagawa, Japan, a few hours south of Osaka, for a series of workshops and opportunities for community members to visit and learn from the Portland design and planning process.
The relationship between Portland and Aridagawa began in 2015 when the PDC We Build Green Cities team visited Aridagawa to review project opportunities. Subsequent visits in October 2015 and June 2016 continued the collaboration. The town is now working with a local architect to realize the vision that developed from the design process.
